HISTORY OF TENNIS

ennis is a sport that has been around for centuries. According to historians, the sport originated in France in the 12th century where members of the French monastery used their hands to play the game of “paume” (palm) – a handball game which involved hitting the ball back and forth by hand. In time, a leather glove was used and then from there a handle was added to the glove, which formed the first racquet.

BENEFITS OF PLAYING TENNIS

Tennis is not all about having fun. It also has some great benefits! We have ranked 5 of our favourite benefits you can get from playing tennis:

It reduces the risk of a heart attack
Tennis demands continuous movement. Your heart rate increases to deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the working muscles. This improves your aerobic fitness and reduces risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attacks.

It’s good for your bones
Research shows that tennis players have stronger bones than people who don’t play racquet sports. The impact of hitting the ball, stopping, and bounding improves your bone density.

It makes you react faster
In tennis you must react fast to where your opponent is moving and judge the timing between the oncoming ball and where it’s going to land. In other words, it’s a great workout for your hand-eye coordination.

It could improve your mental health
Playing a game of tennis releases the feel-good hormones known as endorphins, which can improve your mental health, reduce stress, and lower your risk of conditions like depression.

You get a full body workout
Whether you play singles, doubles or simply hitting the ball against a wall, tennis is a full body workout. Swinging the racquet works the muscles of your arms, shoulders, back and core. You use the muscles of your lower body to run, jump, crouch and move on the spot.
